I love soft boiled eggs and, although I have no problem cutting them open with a sharp knife, I was looking for a way to make the cut a little smoother so that it would make a better presentation for my guests.

I have experimented with a couple of different egg toppers and I really like this one. It takes a little practice to get a nice, clean crack around the egg. I have found that if you put the Rosle egg topper over the rounded end of the end, rather than the pointy part, it works better. Also, extra large eggs produce the best results. I hope that my little video review is helpful to you!

The trick to using this is to have the bottom of the egg in the palm of your hand and use your fingers, of the same hand, to hold the egg topper bell down firmly onto the top of the egg. Then lift up the handle all the way up and let it go. Smack!
I brought this to a family breakfast and everyone had a kick trying it out & topping their soft boiled eggs.
Absolutely useless. I was under the impression that there was a sharp edge or some way of this cutting the shell. There isn't. If you pull the lever up and let go, which is the only thing that seems to affect the shell at all, then you end up with a dent in the shell around the edge of this tool and a ton of cracks everywhere else. After 3 hits we gave up and just peeled the egg - there was still nothing more than a dent around the edge of this. Unfortunately it's too late to return - don't make the same mistake - it's a waste of money.
Works great. Purchased with Kuchenprofi 0750828202 2-Piece Egg Cup with Oval... Pull 2 times for best results.
Here's my recipe for the best soft boiled eggs, this recipe is fool-proof: Fill a small sauce pan with only 1/2 inch of water, bring to a boil, carefully with a spoon add eggs into the boiling water, cover sauce pan and continue boiling for exactly 6 1/2 minutes (no more, no less), remove sauce pan from heat and carefully with a spoon remove eggs from boiling water and submerge eggs in container with cold running water for about a minute; you now have the best soft boiled eggs ever.
The secret: it is the steam from the 1/2 inch of water that cooks the eggs, and not the water level in the pan, so that means you can add as many eggs as you would like, and they all will cook evenly in the steam (otherwise, the alternative of adding eggs to a full pan of hot water will quickly reduce the water temperature with each additional egg added, thus resulting in unpredictable cooking times and poor results).
Tops eggs cleanly, but bottoms invariably are cracked trying to get the top off since it doesn't cut the membrane and the bottom is weakend after being structurally freed from the top. Got it for my lovely but wimpy wife.

I recommend that you cultivate the skill of topping a softboiled egg with a table knife. Give it one good swift horizontal thwack with wrist action to just slice off the top cleanly. Use the blunt end of the egg. Be brave, man up, give it a try. A little practice and you can do this anywhere, no need to spend $20 then carry this gimmick arround with you for the rest of your life. You don't have to hammer your egg with a spoon like your English granny, either. (I should do a www video on this technique that I learned from my Dad, whom I fondly recall whenever my lovely wife drags this thing out of the cupboard. Ah, priceless.) Enjoy ;-).

I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 3 simply because it does what I expected it to do, but as a general tool for the kitchen I would give it 3. I've attached a photo of what it does to my eggs (medium boiled), which are usually pretty much impossible to peel. So even though it just breaks my eggs in half, it does make it easier to eat them as it breaks them cleanly so I'm not eating any eggshell and it's easy to eat out of the shell with the little egg spoons they also sell on amazon. I've tried every tip and trick to get my eggs to peel better, but if they're not hard boiled, nothing works. So this is the next best thing I guess.
I've been using this for a few months and it works great. As other users have recommended, it's best to hold the egg in your hand (use a napkin if it's too hot) while you use it, otherwise the end in the egg cup smashes when you release the spring to crack the top. And one other strange note, it makes my dog go crazy when I use it (almost every morning). He cries and barks--I don't know if it makes a sound I can't hear when you pull the spring-loaded handle or if it's the loud crack as it hits the egg, but he's started barking now whenever he sees me take it out to use it.

One downside--there are usually a few small fragments of eggshell that crack off where the "cut line" is, so you have to make sure they don't end up in your egg when you take the top off.
I was using the tooth type and it was pretty messy so decided to try this type. I got an egg cooker and soft boiled eggs are a weakness now... I don’t have egg holders so I eat mine on toast. I take the egg, support it on a small thick shot glass, and use the device. Too hard and you crack the entire egg. Too soft and nothing happens. I do a few small pulls and check, click click check until the shell is where I can open it. Because of the egg cooker which requires a hole in the air spot, I crack on the wide end.

It is then a matter of peeling the shell away and there may be a few small pieces but they are easily swept away. I then take a spoon and go inside the membrane and I can remove the egg usually intact using a regular teaspoon. It will take about 3 minutes for 4 eggs, but I am getting faster as I get used to the tool. On the whole, Happy I have this.
I was doubtful looking at the negative reviews. Seems that some customers have had problems. However I can only say that it has worked everytime for me. I have cracked open 20 or 30 eggs since buying it and have not had any totally collapsed eggshells.

I guess that there is a fine line between a very robust eggshell and the need for the baby chick to get out. There will also be a great variation between the egg shells themselves. I am sure that the minimum metered food for a battery chichen in a cage will produce a very different eggshell to a genuine free range duck egg.

This eggshell cracker does not always crack open an egg perfectly as obviously each eggshell varies as does the number of times I use the spring loaded handle and how far I pull the handle out from the base. Most times I get a neat crack all around the egg shell, but this does not necessarily break the membrane inside the eggshell and this has to be cut with the tip of a knife.

I have had very good results but I have been very careful in how I have held the egg and this eggshell cracker in one hand, operating the handle/stricker with the other hand - yes being careful does take a little longer.
Super invention. To avoid mishaps, hold the device on the top of the egg by the metal stem, do not touch the dome. Activate the 'thwacker' once only, if the dome then clings to the egg, hold the egg and gently turn the dome to release. The top of the shell may not come off but there is a fine line crack that just needs a knife or spoon to gently remove it. Some egg shells may also crack/fracture below the 'circular crack', but is usually no real problem.
