"Made in Germany"? Not quite.
The product works reasonably well and since this is the only one I've tried I don't know how it compares to other similar egg openers. I chose to pay at least $10 more for this because it clearly says "Made in Germany" in the Amazon description. However, when the package arrived, the product carton states (and this is a direct quote, photo attached) "Designed and assembled in Germany. Made in China/India". Does that qualify as "Made in Germany"? I don't think so and especially since the product itself says "Made in China/India".
So, this egg opener works fine but people paying $10 more than other comparable products, because they think this is made in Germany, are being misled.

"Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher" is a good example. Sure it's long, but when taken apart literally the "egg shell pre-determined breaking point causer" actually makes sense. At least it does to Germans, everyone else needs a handful of words to explain what this breakfast gadget does. Quite simply, an "Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher" is used to crack the shell of a boiled egg. Admittedly, they're not as common in Germany as they should be, since soft-boiled eggs served in an egg cup with a mini egg spoon, are an essential part of a traditional German breakfast. People who haven't had a second cup of coffee, however, can be excused for cracking their eggs with spoons rather than trying to ask for the "Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher." Though dropping a weight onto an egg remains something everyone should try at least once.
Watched a few videos on Youtube and decided this was a toy I must have. Good quality and weight. Cracks eggs as advertised.
This thing is elegant, simple, and fun - and invariably evokes discussion of how it should be used. Egg shells vary in thickness, so there really is no "right" or "wrong" way... except for MY way (or the highway), of course. Just drop the calibrated ball, and done! (I nudge the "cap" off with a paring knife.)
I should mention that I am eggshell phobic ("ovitestaphobic" ?) and this device successfully minimizes eggshell bits (gaack!). A shard or 2 once in a while needs to be meticulously picked off, but it works SO much better than my husband's egg basher, which has a handle that you pull back and SNAP to crack the egg - totally hit or miss...
I am very much pleased and relieved to have discovered this brilliantly-engineered German alternative to egg-snapping and spoon-tapping, and have no problem at all with the Chinese making it... as long as they precisely follow German Spezifikationen!
At first I thought this might be another gimmicky kitchen gadget that takes up more space than it’s worth. But I was pleasantly surprised. Not only do I no longer have to worry about eggshells in my eggs or batter, but it’s fun to use as well. I like playing “French Revolution” and imagining the hapless eggs to be persons needing some attitude adjustment. Do you have an obnoxious boss or coworker? WHACK! An idiot neighbor causing you grief? WHACK! Some bimbo or mimbo celebrity preaching about things they know nothing about? WHACK! True, it’s not as much fun as a real guillotine, but you can’t crack an egg very effectively with one of those, plus you don’t have to worry about going to prison.
Not sure if it is operator error, but it just doesn't seem to work. The videos showing how you do one tap and then peel off the top easily just doesn't seem to hold true for me. It does make an indent in the top of the egg, but doesn't make a clean break at all. I almost always have to go back to using a spoon to remove the top shelf. My husband had better luck with a well done egg, but since I like mine a little softer, it just doesn't seem to work.

How to use
Hold the egg ,put the dome of the egg cracker on the egg's small end and touching the cracker dome with the hand holding the egg
You pull the pendulum up then Releasing it for 3 or 5 times.to be sure a complete circle is cracked all the way through.
Remove the topper, leaving your egg with a perfect circular crack. Gently remove top of egg shell with fingers or knife. Dispose of egg shell! Then cook any delicious food you like!
A slight learning curve; as of my 3rd try, the routine is, puncture the egg on the big end, lay the egg on its side (puncture hole up) to cook, cook about 1/2 degree harder than I'd think, roll the egg around in a little cool water after cooking, put the egg small end up, drop the ball twice, and the top comes off with a tilt of the pole. Then, like the chicken who laid the egg, I cackle at a job well done. The German language on the box is also fun, especially the description of the Clack! as Der Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher. Lord knows what the description would be for a multisyllabic product!
works like a charm, but it takes some getting used to. Everyone who gives this less than 5 stars is just complaining because they A can't get it right, or B they dont understand the physics and the countless variables of cracking an egg, e.g. how boiled it is, the shell density, what side you crack, the type of egg, etc. You can't possibly hope to build a device that works on all types, this is the only one I've had but it gets the job done better than my hands
I'm so happy with this tool. I have tried several other types. The scissor one, the two finger squeeze eith little teeth. They cracked the edges so much I was eating shell. This is so simple to use and works every time. You may have to lift the top of egg off after but it's easy. Make sure to only steady with top black ball. Don't hold stainless cap on the egg. Drop the ball and it works every time.
Great but hugely expensive
This product is a must have item for the lovers of soft-boiled eggs. It is a genius invention, works without fail, a brilliant present an entertainer at Sunday morning breakfast with the family.
